Kung Fu - What is it ?

If the words “Kung Fu” conjure up images of bald- headed acolytes in candlelit temples chanting mysterious esoteric mantras…… then think again !!

Chinese Kung Fu is one of the world's oldest martial arts systems, dating back to the reign of the Yellow Emperor (around 2700 BC). It is the ancestor of most other Far Eastern martial art forms whether they be Japanese, Korean, Okinawan, Thai, Vietnamese, Burmese, Nepalese, Malaysian, Indonesian or Filipino. It is not the "Shaolin Monks" acrobatic circus that has been propagated in recent times.

There are several hundred named styles of Kung Fu known to exist today. Traditionally these have been divided into two groups of categories. The first category of "Northern and Southern" is based on Chinese geographical origin, while the second of"External and Internal" or "Hard and Soft" is based on differences related to the study of movement, Chinese anatomical theories, philosophical ideas and interpretations of the ways in which forces can be generated, harnessed and utilized for health, healing and self development as well as in self defence.

The style we practice - Shaolin Kung Fu

Traditional Shaolin Kung Fu is an elaborate, highly sophisticated, supremely effective martial art which has been tried and tested in real life situations throughout its long and colourful history. Over many centuries it has developed into a system of self-defence relevant to the needs of today's modern, more violent, less tolerant society. In addition and perhaps more importantly; it is a System of Character Building and Self-Development which teaches vital life skills. It builds confidence and self esteem by training the mind, body and spirit to remain calm and strong in the face of challenge and adversity, helping the practitioner to respond correctly and positively in highly pressurized and extreme circumstances whether in daily life or in self-defence situations.

We practise a vigorous combination of Northern and Southern Shaolin Kung Fu that harnesses the main principles from both "Hard and Soft" systems. Our structured syllabus includes:

a.  Forms - These are sequences of moves mainly based on the

     principles of movement and fighting strategies used by

     various animals, birds and insects.

b.  A series of highly effective evasion exercises.

c.  Numerous hand, arm, leg, foot and body strikes.

d.  How to block attacks with and from arms, legs and various

     Oriental and modern day weapons including disarming

     techniques.

e.  Grappling - Known as Chin Na and Shuai Jiao this includes

     Head, Shoulder, Hip, Arm & Leg checks, locks and throws;

     take-downs, joint locks and foot sweeps as well as

     immobilizing and subduing techniques.
